We are hoping to be having piglets on the homestead soon so I have been trying to make sure that we are ready when the time comes. This, for me, has meant a lot of research because I don’t know the first thing about pigs and birthing. I’ve dealt with goats, not pigs.

I know that we need to create a pen for Pappa Pig to get him out of the pen that Momma Pig is in right now because that is where she will have the piglets at. However, other than that, I know that we need to make sure she has a good area for bedding. That will likely go under the shelter in the pen so that she can protect the piglets pretty easy as there will only be one way in and one way out.

I think the main problem for me is that I don’t know what, if anything, I need to have on hand for when the piglets get here. Heck, I don’t even know for sure that Momma Pig will let us get any where near them when they get here. There will be a strong learning curve this year when they do come. I think we will be ready, but I know that things can happen that we don’t prepare for also. So we are going to prepare for the worst and pray for the best. 

So my request is this: Any of you homesteaders out there that know a thing or two about birthing pigs, could you please let me know what I am in for. What should I be prepared for? Is there anything special that I need? I have a lot on hand because of the goats, but if there’s anything I may need that I wouldn’t have for goats already, please leave me a comment below and let me know what I may need or what I should expect. I would be so very grateful to you for many years to come.
